RESEARCH INTERESTS AND FOCUS

MILES  aims to unravel the cognitive, experiential and emotional processes that support the acquisition of mathematics, literacy and second language abilities during adolescence.  To this end, we have collected a wealth of longitudinal data that cover several important aspects of adolescents' lives within and outside the classroom.  The macro-areas of interest for which data were collected at each wave are depicted  below.

The first data collection wave took place in January 2016 and lasted ~90 minutes.
Students contributed data on cognitive abilities, educationally-relevant personality characteristics and motivation, wellbeing and mental health.
Particular focus was devoted to the collection of data on educationally-relevant environments (e.g. classroom environment and teacher-student relations) and socio-demographic characteristics.

Check out the MILES data dictionary for a detailed account of all the measures collected at Wave 1.

The second data collection wave took place in June 2016 and lasted ~60 minutes.
This second collection wave included several measures also collected at Wave 1, such as information on educationally-relevant characteristics, wellbeing and personality. However, this second collection also focused on  other important aspects of adolescents' lives, including relationships, the home environment, risky behaviours and career aspirations.

Check out the MILES data dictionary for a detailed account of all the measures collected at Wave 2.

The third data collection wave took place in June 2017 and lasted ~60 minutes. This third collection wave included several measures also collected at Wave 1 and 2, such as educationally-relevant characteristics and environments and mental health. In addition, this third  wave  focused on  peer relationships and wellbeing, including data on bullying, victimization, eating behaviour and eating disorders.
